Review: Spud Sounds @ Eiger studios 14/10/22 - an insight.

Ahmad Sadallah

Friday night brought us the fifth of the Spud Sounds’ events, hosted at Eiger Studios in Leeds, an anticipated sold-out event.

The hosts did not disappoint, bringing us various sounds, infusing breaks with the tech-house synths that we all know and love. Accompanied by ABB Events for their Martin Audio sound system as well as Raptor Sounds for the lasers, it’s clear that the Spud Sounds boys’ went the extra mile to carry out their vision for the event and it paid off, even with little things they did like having a fancy dress box at the front for people or their Spud mascot walking around through the night, it created this sense of interactivity that you don’t often get at other events.

Spud Sounds Resident DJ Bud

The night started with a set from Resident DJ Bud, an enticing all-vinyl set bringing us the best from the House, Electro and Italo worlds, a very bouncy set to set the tone and bring the energy for the night.

Jimmy Rouge x Marma Boog B2B

We got a very animated back-to-back set from Jimmy Rouge and Marma Boog, both insanely talented DJs in their own right, Jimmy Rouge’s energetic dance records had the crowd grooving with a cool 90s feel to it. The Dublin-bred and now Amsterdam-based DJ has worked with the likes of MCDE, Hunee and Move D in previous years, really showing the boppy old-school dance influence in his mixing taste. His Boiler Room debut is available on Youtube which perfectly captures the sounds he explores in his mixes. Pond Life’s own Marma Boog also went back to back with Jimmy Rouge and certainly did not disappoint, his funky disco sound was captivating, and you could not resist a dance through that whole set. Currently living in Amsterdam, when not producing his music, Boog is busy doing regular sets, making a name for himself in the disco tech-house scene. This also comes after multiple festival appearances here in the UK over the summer, notable appearances at Gottwood and Cosmic Roots Festival. Check out his recent release ‘Hotel Palais’ all through his label, Pond Life records and Jimmy Rouge's work at Orange Tree records.

Jay Carda

Jay Carda had the stage as the last headliner of the night and did not hold back at all. Taking inspiration from the likes of artists and DJs like Bonono and Fela, you hear the exotic melodies she likes to mix, they have a real organic feel to them. Her genre fluidity was also something to admire during the set; jumping from bouncy summery tech house beats to ‘bass-driven’ higher bpm breaks which flowed perfectly all together and proved the superiority of the sound system Spud Sounds had in. Jay is currently London-based and has been involved in the scene for years now, playing some of the biggest festivals in the world like her set at Glastonbury this year, and also has performed alongside some big names in the electronic world; Bicep, Chemical Brothers, Honey Dijon, the list goes on! Carder also co-founded record label ‘Erbium’, also be sure to check them out…

Spud Sounds Resident DJ Lyde

Resident DJ Lyde closed the event with what hosts called a “high-intensity set blending genres of underground UKG & house.” A big night with some absolute bangers, and Lyde kept it going strong until the last song.

All in all, I really enjoyed the event, the attention to detail was evident in the quality of the event itself, something I think is nearly as important as the music itself when it comes to hosting an event which I think the Spud Sound boys' did really well.
