After a 4-year album hiatus, dropping what many call his best work to date, Lil Yachty returned with his 5th studio LP, “Let’s Start Here”.
“I really wanted to be taken seriously as an artist, not just some SoundCloud rapper or some mumble rapper.”
Dubbed as a whole new sound compared to the bouncy trap projects that he has been involved in, Yachty delves into deep introspective views in some parts which portray how he has matured over the years. It is clear that the 25 year old has taken the time to work on his sound, you can hear it in the quality of the production, writing and how the project flowed as a whole. This whole album was genre-defying, taking us on a perfectly curated journey, and tapping into a whole new side we’ve never seen from him. The switch from the drum beats and 808s we have seen before from him to the guitars, drums and synths that sound like they’re being played live gave this album a new depth with songs such as ‘ The Black Seminole’, the first song on the project itself. ‘The Zone’ was all but missing a Tame Impala feature, the use of a slow progressive bass guitar with its accompanying drum pattern created this sense of euphoria, a feeling we get really familiar with in this album with songs like ‘Say Something’, the single and my personal favourite. These songs really gave us a sense of transcending musically that only a few artists manage to accomplish during their careers, Travis Scott’s ‘Astroworld’ and Frank Ocean's 'Blonde’ both come to mind.

This alternative approach he has taken here cements his musical literacy in my opinion, he wants to be taken seriously as a musician and this validation seems to stem from a few places in Yatchy’s career. Having constantly been berated for the mumble rap he started off when he first appeared on the scene by music fans, fellow rappers and even label executives, Lil Yachty has really proved with this album he is not limited to the kind of rap we know him for. He has developed a new sound that even his label executives have to accept that they can’t limit him to their boardroom safe option as they have done in previous years. Lil Yachty has worked meticulously on his art, proved massively by the album’s quality. I am so excited about what comes next from him.
